Gibbes Museum of Art

The Gibbes Museum of Art, home to the foremost collection of American art that incorporates the story of Charleston, is inviting the community to join Listening Conversations, a public discussion around new exhibition approaches and diverse perspectives on the artwork in the museum’s permanent collection. Listening Conversations will be held at the Museum (135 Meeting Street), April 3-7, 2023. Participants should register by March 8th and will be contacted about the scheduling of Listening Conversations by March 15th.   Listening Conversations are creatively designed programs for the Museum’s exciting new initiative, CENTERING ART | VOICES. Alongside the curatorial and education teams, these unique conversations will be facilitated by Dr. Karen Chandler, Associate Professor Emerita, Arts Management Program at the College of Charleston. The initiative builds on the meaningful dialogue of diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion the Museum has been engaged in over the years. Through the vision, perspectives and shared stories of a broad cross-section of our community, the project seeks to connect people through art. New visual interactions and fresh interpretations will invite transformative experiences based on the Museum’s content themes of social justice, conservation and the environment, health and wellness and innovation. “We believe art can provide transformative experiences both personally and communally,” says Executive Director Angela Mack. “Through this initiative we are hoping to engage people throughout the community and learn more about what art means to them. The program will inform how we present artwork in the museum’s collection as we plan for the 120th anniversary of the Gibbes in 2025.” To learn more and register, click here.
